Caravan Solar and Battery Upgrades: A Practical Guide for Touring Australians

Freedom camping is a big part of caravan life in Australia, and a reliable 12V system is what makes it possible. If your batteries are flat by the second night, an upgrade might be what you need.

Step 1: Work out how much power you use

Before buying anything, list what you run each day: fridge, lights, water pump, phone and laptop charging, TV, and any inverter loads like a coffee machine or microwave. Add up the watt-hours. That figure is the foundation of your system design.

Step 2: Choose your battery

  • AGM batteries are a proven, lower-cost option but are heavy and should not be deeply discharged regularly.
  • Lithium (LiFePO4) batteries are lighter, offer much more usable capacity, and charge faster, but cost more up front.

Many touring owners find lithium worth the investment, though the right choice depends on your budget and how you travel.

Step 3: Size your solar

Solar panels should be sized to replace what you use each day, with allowance for cloudy days and shade. Roof space is limited on a caravan, so panel efficiency and layout matter. A portable solar blanket can supplement roof panels when you are parked in the shade.

Step 4: Get the rest of the system right

The panels and battery get the attention, but these parts decide whether the system performs:

  • Solar regulator or MPPT controller to charge efficiently.
  • DC-DC charger to charge from your tow vehicle while driving.
  • Battery monitor so you can see what is left.
  • Correct cable size and fusing for safety.
  • Inverter sized to your 240V needs.

Common mistakes to avoid

  • Buying a bigger battery without enough charging capacity to refill it.
  • Undersized cabling that overheats or loses power.
  • Mixing old and new batteries.
  • Skipping proper fusing and protection.

Electrical work on a caravan should be done properly. A poor installation is a safety risk and can cause damage to expensive components.

Get it done right

Hike Caravan Care Centre handles 12V diagnostics, solar installation, battery upgrades, inverters, and full rewiring. We will talk through how you actually travel and recommend a setup that suits it, not the biggest one on the shelf.
