Hail, a collision, a fallen branch, or a mishap at the campsite: damage can happen to any caravan. Dealing with an insurance claim on top of it can feel overwhelming. Knowing how the process generally works makes it far easier.

Note: Every insurer has its own process and requirements, so always check your policy and speak with your insurer directly.

Step 1: Document the damage

Take clear photos of all damage from several angles before anything is moved or repaired. Note when and how it happened. If it involved another party, collect their details.

Step 2: Contact your insurer

Lodge your claim as soon as possible. Your insurer will tell you what they need and whether they have preferred repairers or allow you to choose your own. Many policies allow you to choose, so ask.

Step 3: Get a detailed assessment and quote

A repairer will inspect the van and prepare an itemised quote covering panel work, parts, labour, and any hidden damage. The insurer may send an assessor to review it. Good communication between repairer and insurer speeds this up.

Step 4: Approval

Repairs should only start once the insurer has approved the quote. Be wary of anyone who wants to begin work before approval.

Step 5: Repairs

Typical caravan repairs include:

• Panel and wall repairs or replacement
• Corner and body section replacement
• Delamination repairs
• Window, door, and hatch replacement
• Water damage rectification

If extra damage is found once panels come off, the repairer should contact you and the insurer before continuing.

Step 6: Final check and handover

Inspect the finished work before you sign off. A good repairer will walk you through what was done and make sure you are happy.

• Keep your service records and maintenance history handy.
• Ask questions if anything in the quote is unclear.
• Do not delay. Water getting into damaged areas can make things worse.
• Keep copies of all paperwork and correspondence.
